Debra Whitson

I’m Debra Whitson, founder of WhitsonLaw, PLLC. My claim to fame is helping families navigate some of the most difficult transitions of their lives with strategy, compassion, and a focus on solutions—not unnecessary conflict. I’m also the author of Divorce Like A Pro and Child Custody Done Right, and after more than three decades practicing law, I’ve learned that the best family law outcomes are rarely about “winning.” They’re about protecting what matters most and helping people move forward.

Family and matrimonial law is my bailiwick—particularly divorce, child custody, complex family matters, mediation, and helping clients find practical solutions when the stakes are high. I work with people who often have a lot to protect: their children, businesses, careers, financial security, privacy, and future. My specialty is taking situations that feel overwhelming and creating a clear strategy for what comes next.

I wish more people understood that hiring a strong family law attorney does not mean preparing for war. Sometimes the strongest legal strategy is knowing how to resolve a case without creating unnecessary destruction along the way.

Court absolutely has a place when it is needed, but litigation should not automatically be the first answer. Good family law representation is about understanding the client, identifying what truly matters, protecting their legal and financial interests, and choosing the right process to achieve the best possible outcome.

The accolades and recognition are wonderful, but building something that can positively change how families experience divorce is the accomplishment that means the most to me.

Before focusing my career on helping families resolve conflict, I was a prosecutor—and I tried approximately 100 jury trials and more than 60 non-jury trials.

People sometimes find that surprising because so much of my work today focuses on settlement, mediation, collaboration, and reducing conflict. But I think that background is actually one of my greatest strengths. I know what litigation looks like, what it costs families, and when it is genuinely necessary. That allows me to advocate for peaceful solutions from a position of experience rather than avoidance.
